A group of researchers from State University of Campinas (UNICAMP) have developed a new circuit, more efficient, to produce Atorvastatina. The substance is the active ingredient of the world’s best selling drug Lipitor, used for cholesterol levels redfuction.

The patent for this medicine has expired in Brazil last December and this new circuit of production is an important step towards the development of a brazilian generic version of Lipitor, according to research coordinator, Luiz Carlos Dias, professor at UNICAMP’s Chemistry Institute, responsible for the new process along with his colleague Adriano Siqueira Vieira.
